Google, the new Napster

I saw this little trick on Digg this morning. It actually sorta, kinda works.

Cut and paste the following text into Google:

{-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:"index of" +"last modified" +"parent directory" +description +size +(wma|mp3) "DIGG"}

Replace the word “DIGG” with the name of your favorite band and voila, a listing of open indexes containing downloadable music files. Of course you could just go here and let them do the dirty work for you, but where’s the fun n that?

WotW: Musicovery.com

I visit dozens of new websites every week and a lot of them are absolutely fantastic. Instead of hording these Internet gems all to myself, I’ve decided to share some of them with my fellow netizens. Here’s the deal, I will pick one website a week that really stands out amongst the rest and then write about it here. I shall call this segment……..WEBSITE OF THE WEEK! I know what you are thinking, how did I ever come up with such a brilliant an original title? One word,… laziness. And there you have it. Let’s move on.

This week’s Website of the Week choice is musicovery.com. Like Last.fm and Pandora, musicovery is a music discovery site which helps to match listeners with music that they might be interested in based on their musical tastes.

musicovery.com The first thing you see when you go to the site is a control panel of sorts on the left hand side of website. From here you can choose what you want to listen to, and there are multiple ways of doing this. The first set of options include LoFi and HiFi. To listen to HiFi you need a paid subscription. I don’t have a paid subscription, so LoFi it is. The next set of options include Hit, non Hit, and Discovery. You can choose any combination of the these three options, but at least one must be checked. Hit and non Hit are pretty obvious as to what they are, the Discovery option isn’t so clear though. I assume it grabs independent or otherwise lesser known artists and adds them to the play list. I can’t find any documentation to confirm this though, so I could be wrong.

Up next is an interactive time line. If you leave it as is, it will simply tell you the era in which the song being played originates from. For a little more control, you can use the time line to narrow down your music discovery session to a specific decade, or even year.

musicovery.comBelow the time line is the matrix. There are four points on the matrix: calm, energetic, dark, and positive. By clicking on the matrix, you are telling musicovery what kind of mood you want the music to reflect. Experimenting with this is half the fun of musicovery. Once you click a spot on the matrix, a variety of songs will appear to the right. These songs are all color coded by genre, but all share the same characteristics of the matrix, i.e. calm, energetic, dark, positive. So, if you clicked somewhere in between energetic and positive, all the songs that are displayed will have these specific traits in common, whether they be reggae, blues, funk or disco.

musicovery.comWhat if you want to listen to something energetic, but you’re only interested in one specific musical genre such as rock? No problem. Below the matrix are color coded buttons which list specific genres. When you click on one of these buttons, a mini-matrix is displayed for that particular genre. This mini-matrix works the same way as the main matrix, but only the results of that specific musical genre will be displayed. You may have noticed that the songs displayed to the right of the control panel are now all of one color, in this case dark blue. Dark blue represents the musical genre rock. Pretty cool, huh? They do seem to be missing some popular genres though, but we’ll chalk that up to them being new. All in all this is a very fun website to play around with.

Another great feature is the ease in which musicovery lets you purchase the songs you are currently listening too. Each song has an iTunes and Amazon link associated with it that will take you directly to that product for an easy check out. Actually, it’s probably not a great feature for impulse buyers, but for everyone else it’s great.

I could write more, but I don’t think I’d do the site any justice. It’s one of those things that you just have to try out for yourself, but if you love music, you’ll most likely love musicovery.

Apple’s new mobile phone

Apple finally revealed their new mobile phone. Head over to Engadget to see pictures and more live coverage.

The phone is absolutely gorgeous. It runs OS X and has a 3.5″ widescreen / touchscreen (only one actual button). It plays music, movies, and TV shows, and integrates seamlessly with iLife. I’m excited and I’m not even a phone guy.

Oh, and it has wi-fi and bluetooth capabilities. Wow…

Apple partnered with Cingular (now AT&T)

$499 for a 4Gb
$599 for an 8Gb

Last minute Christmas ideas

Dear Santa,

The first thing I want is a huckleberry attachment for my MacBook. It’s a little webcam mirror that will essentially turn the built-in webcam around and allow me to shoot things in front of me. :) I can’t think of a practical use for this, but I want it.

Huckleberry

The second thing I’d like to add to my list is this Web 2.0 poster that would look absolutely smashing in my office. You have to order this one from Europe, so I’d step it up a notch.

Web 2.0 Poster

While you’re at it, you might as well throw a Zune on that list. The brown one please. It will look nice sitting next to my iPod. They can fight it out for my affection.

Stop motion musician

This is incredible. It’s a stop motion video of a guy playing the drums and the piano. He claims he can’t play either, but using stop motion, he sounds like a pro. It’s pretty cool looking too, in a freaky sort of way.

Taillights Fade

Sister can you hear me now
The ringing in your ears
I’m down on the ground
My luck’s been dry for years
I’m lost in the dark
And I feel like a dinosaur
Broken face and broken hands
I’m a broken man
I’ve hit the wall
I’m about to fall
But I’m closing in on it
I feel so weak
On a losing streak
Watch my taillights fade to black
I read a thing about this girl
She was a hermit in her world
Her story was much like mine
She could be my valentine
And although we’ve never met
I won’t forget her yet
She cut herself off from her past
Now she’s alone at last
I feel so sick
Lost love’s last licks
But I’m closing down on it
I feel so weak
On a losing streak
Watch my taillights fade to black
Lost my life in cheap wine
Now it’s quiet time
Cappy Dick nor Jesus Christ
Could not help my fate
But I’m underneath a gun
I’m singing about my past
Had myself a wonderful thing
But I could not make it last
I’ve hit the wall
I’m about to fall
But I’m closing in on it
I feel so small
Underneath it all
Watch my taillights fade to black

Yeah, I’ve been on a huge Buffalo Tom kick lately. It has to be the weather. We used to see them a lot this time of year all over Boston and Providence. Ahh, the good ol’ days. I’ll have to see if they’re playing again sometime soon.

Porchlight

The fire blazed away
The kitchen porch was all that remained
And I’m out here alone - beat up and pissed
Until this very day
That old hotel rang back in fuzzy time
And I was ravaged to the bone
Your voice got smaller ’til I realized
It was gone

I listened to Buffalo Tom this morning for the first time in like a year. I almost forgot how much I love this band, especially in autumn. I’m not sure why so much in autumn. I think it’s because I like everything better in autumn.

According to their website, they are working on their 7th studio album. I thought the band had broken up years ago. It’s good to be wrong from time to time.

Amazon’s Unbox service launched

With Amazon’s Unbox service, you can purchase (or rent) movies and TV shows online and have them downloaded directly to your computer. Services like this will be the final blow to companies like Netflix and Blockbuster, not to mention the last surviving video store chains hanging on by a thread. These types of companies will slowly start to disappear. To quote Agent Smith “It’s inevitable.”

This won’t happen over night. In fact, we are years away from services like this taking hold at all. There are still plenty of obstacles to overcome. You see, when you download a video from Unbox, you are limited to watching it on your computer or portable video player. That’s great for a small niche group of people, but it won’t impress the the majority of consumers out there. Especially the ones with 50″ plasma TVs. Pricing is also an issue. Why would I buy Braveheart as a digital download for $13.17 when I can buy the physical DVD for the same price? Is this service targeted at the spontaneous buyer who wants to watch the movie immediately? Perhaps. That’s still a pretty small niche though.

Digital rentals, however, have more of an appeal to me. I can justify spending $1.99 or $2.99 on a rental. Once you download the rental, you have a set amount of time to watch that movie until it becomes inactive. I believe that number is 30 days right now. Again, though, I have Windows XP Media Center with a very large monitor and digital 6.1 speakers. I’m in the minority. Most people have small monitors and crappy speakers. Who would want to watch The Matrix on that set up?

It will be interesting to see how Apple competes with this. To tell the truth, I’m a bit surprised Amazon beat Apple to this at all. I’ve been hearing rumors of Apple’s movie service for weeks now.

One thing is for sure, the world of media is changing at an increasingly rapid rate. I often think of how we will tell our children and grandchildren about things like network television and the TV Guide. How we had to sit in front of the TV at the exact time a show started or you would miss it, perhaps never to see it again. Or how you had to sit through an entire network news program while they spoon fed you stories you didn’t want to hear, all because of the fear of missing the story you did want to hear.

Thank god we live in the age of the Internet!
