Which DSLR to buy? Any thoughts?

Let’s say you have about $800 to $900 to spend on camera equipment. Let’s also say you have no other camera equipment to speak of, and no ties to any specific brand (anymore), other than a little experience.

What would you buy? Here is what I’m debating.

a. The new Rebel XSi camera kit. (coming in April) I noticed the standard 18-55 now has image stabilizer. That’s really nice, but it’s still just an entry level lens, right?. = $900ish

b. The Rebel XTi body only with a decent lens, such as Sigma’s 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 which seems to be getting good reviews. = $900ish

c. Or, since I have no more ties to Canon, make a complete switch to another brand such as Nikon. This scares me a bit since I have no experience with them, but you can’t argue with their reputation.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

Apple’s new mobile phone

Apple finally revealed their new mobile phone. Head over to Engadget to see pictures and more live coverage.

The phone is absolutely gorgeous. It runs OS X and has a 3.5″ widescreen / touchscreen (only one actual button). It plays music, movies, and TV shows, and integrates seamlessly with iLife. I’m excited and I’m not even a phone guy.

Oh, and it has wi-fi and bluetooth capabilities. Wow…

My Nintenday

Nintendo DS LiteIf they can say Nintendog, I can say Nintenday! And what a Nintenday it was. Let us recap yesterday’s events, shall we?. I was on a quest to get my daughter a Nintendo DS Lite for Christmas. Little did I know that Santa had already given all his DS lites away for the year. (that son of a….) Luckily, M.L.L. has some connections at a local Gamestop. She was able to pull some strings and secure me a pretty new DS. It’s a good thing too, since I already bought Cam a game for it. My priorities are backwards sometimes.

Later on in the day, after gazing at Cameron’s shiny new DS, I decided to take my own out and give it a quick polish — yes I was a little jealous. So I grabbed my lens cloth and I proceeded to carefully wipe off about a thousand tiny finger prints. Hence the reason Santa is bringing Cameron her very own DS.Nintendo DS Cracked I was just about done shining it up when I saw the cracks. Two cracks to be exact, one on each hinge. I had never noticed these before, so I assumed they were relatively new. After doing a little research, I found that I wasn’t alone here. It seems there are quite a few incidents of cracking hinges on some models of the DS Lite. According to Nintendo, it accounts for only 0.02% of the units sold. Mm hmm, sure it does. They do, however, recommend that you contact customer service right away if this should happen to your DS. So I did, and what a delightful experience it was. Not only are they going to repair it free of charge, they are going to pay for the shipping too. But it gets better! I should get my DS back within seven days. Not too shabby if you ask me. The customer service rep was a nice guy too. We talked for a bit about all sorts of things, such as the Wii, Nintendo’s competition, the industry in general, Nintendo’s philosophies, etc… It was very interesting. He has worked for Nintendo for 13 years.

My Nintenday gets even better. I got to try the Nintendo Wii for the first time and I was utterly blown away. I had some expectations, sure, but nothing like what I experienced yesterday. Nintendo WiiI only got to try the system for ten minutes or so before I was snapped back to reality, so I may be jumping the gun here, but for those ten minutes I felt like I was looking into a crystal ball. Those ten minutes gave me a glimpse into the future, and not just of gaming, but of how we will eventually interact with everything. Let’s begin. The game was Zelda; the task was fishing. I pulled pack the Wiimote and then lunged it forward as I watched the virtual fishing pole mimic my every move instantaneously. I followed the bobber as in soared through the pixelated sky until it finally plopped into the water. Wii Nunchaku At the very moment of impact, I felt the Wii remote shutter ever so slightly. It sort of reminded me of…..fishing. I gave the Wiimote a tug every now and then until it was finally time to reel in the line. So I grabbed the left part of the controller and started spinning it as if I was actually reeling in a fish. As I did so, the Wiimote started to vibrate rhythmically, in sync with the motion of my left hand. It sort of reminded me of, well…..fishing. There was even a point when people started to gather around to find out what the hell I was doing. From the outside, I must have looked like a demented mime strung out on crack. Anyways, It was really fun and I can definitely see the potential for this system. I plan on writing a full review of the system once I get Cameron gets it for her birthday. Oh, did I mention she’s getting it for her birthday? Which, mind you, is only three weeks after Christmas.

With this in mind, I proceeded to the counter to talk with the manager who sold me the Nintendo DS. I asked him if he had any Nintendo Wiis in stock. Now, I’ve been to about ten other stores before this one, looking to buy the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii and have had zero luck, so I was pretty sure I knew what the answer was going to be. I was just hoping he wouldn’t burst out laughing. He never did. Instead, he just looked me in the eyes and said in a very robotic, monotone voice, “We are currently sold out of all Nintendo Wiis”. As he was doing this, his head started twitching to the left. So then I asked him if he thought he would see anymore before Christmas, in which he replied in the same robotic, monotone voice, “We are currently sold out of all Nintendo Wiis”. His head was twitching to the left even more and at this point I was starting to get a little freaked out. I figured it was the holiday pressure getting to him. I was about to say thank you and walk out of the store when he said in the same robotic, monotone voice, “Even if we did get a shipment of Nintendo Wiis an hour ago, we are not allowed to sell them until exactly 9:00 A.M. on Monday morning.” His head furiously twitching to the left now. That’s when I got it. Sitting on the floor to his left were two large brown boxes. I looked up at the manager. He was smiling at me. I smiled back. We shared a special moment.

And that concludes my Nintenday. My Nintenight (that just sounds stupid) was spent trying out Final Fantasy III on my cracked DS. We’ll save that for another post though. Oh, and by the way, I’ll be a little late for work Monday morning. :)

iPhone, iPhone, iPhone

It’s not really a secret that Apple will be releasing an iPhone in the near future. Some analysts predict that we may see it as early as January 15. That’s right around the corner if it’s true. I was contemplating the purchase of a Razr V3, but the last two Apple products that I’ve bought have impressed me so much that I think I might actually wait and see what Apple has to offer.

From what I gather, the iPhone (or maybe iTalk?) has been a hot topic for years now, but many questions still remain. What will it look like? What features will it include? How much will it cost? It seems that no one outside of Apple really knows for sure, but many have had fun imagining.

Here are some pictures of Apple concept phones designed by various geeks around the Net. Some of these images date back to 2002, if not longer.

There’s even a mock iPhone commercial that was released a few weeks ago. It’s pretty damn sleek too. Check it out.

I would buy that in a heartbeat.

Last minute Christmas ideas

Dear Santa,

The first thing I want is a huckleberry attachment for my MacBook. It’s a little webcam mirror that will essentially turn the built-in webcam around and allow me to shoot things in front of me. :) I can’t think of a practical use for this, but I want it.

Huckleberry

The second thing I’d like to add to my list is this Web 2.0 poster that would look absolutely smashing in my office. You have to order this one from Europe, so I’d step it up a notch.

Web 2.0 Poster

While you’re at it, you might as well throw a Zune on that list. The brown one please. It will look nice sitting next to my iPod. They can fight it out for my affection.

Wordpress widget; testing 1, 2, 3

I just installed a Wordpress widget for my Macbook and I decided to give it a spin. If it works like it’s suppose to, I will be able to post messages a lot faster than going through the normal interface.

Granted, I won’t be able do much text formatting. I also won’t be able to add photos or videos to my posts. At least not easily. I do think it will be a great little widget for posting quick thoughts though.

Let’s try it out…

This is so obnoxious.

I would definitely wear something like this. I picture myself walking down the street with a big glowing “loser” plastered across my chest.

What happens if it rains out? Do you get electrocuted?

New tech meets old craft

You know what I think we don’t have enough of in this world? Good old fashioned wooden computers. The best thing about wooden computers is that there is no upgrading. When it’s time for a new computer, just chuck the old one in the fireplace and widdle a new one.

camera + flickr + blog = fun

So I bought a new camera last week. It was a toss up between a few cameras, but I finally settled on the Canon Powershot A620. I specifically bought this camera for quantity, not quality. Let me splain. I own 2 really nice Canons, a 10D (dslr) and an Elan 7 (slr). I love them both, but they are ginormous. Try rollerblading with a toaster oven strapped around your neck and you’ll have an idea of what I’m talking about.

WaterfallEnter my new camera. The plan is to keep this camera with me at all times. I’m also going to focus less on getting the perfect shot, and more on just getting the shot. If I want to take a portrait of someone or if have the time to use my tripod, then yes, I’ll whip out one of my big guns. But for everyday use this camera is perfect.

Odin (taken by Cam) I also created a new flickr account. This will be the heart and soul of my photoblog. Every picture I take with this little camera will be uploaded to flickr for all to see. I’m not claiming that these pictures will be all that exciting. Some of them may be down right boring. Okay, most of them, but that’s not the point! The point is that they will be there in chronological order from now until I die in 2097. You’ll be able to sort them by tags, groups, dates, or photosets (albums).

Another self portrait On the right sidebar you will always see the last 10 pictures I’ve uploaded to my flickr account. I can change the photostream by changing the tag associated with it. For example, if I use the tag “friends”, the photostream will only show the last pictures I’ve uploaded which I’ve tagged “friends”. Right now there is no tag associated with the photostream so it will show all of my pictures regardless of what I tagged them. But that’s neither here nor there.

You can view my entire photostream anytime by clicking on this icon flickr icon located at the bottom of the sidebar. You can also just click one of the thumbnails also located on the sidebar. And that’s that. Exciting huh? Where are you going?

Let the fun begin…

mm hmm

In the interest of avoiding copyright infringement I should mention that these four pictures were taken by the very creative and talented Cameron Ann. Yes, including the self portrait. Like I said, she’s very creative.
